The
beauty of a tropical island brimming with activity and adventure,
the excitement of a cosmopolitan city, the underpinnings of
a gracious host culture, the progressive business climate
as the hub of the Pacific Rim, it's all wrapped up in one!
Waikiki Beach is still the mecca of people-watching,
and there are many to watch. Tourists and locals mingle in
the sun-drenched stretch of white sand, with Diamond Head
proudly standing guard in the distance. Wave skis, boogie
boards, snorkel equipment and "tanker"surfboards
can be rented by the hour, and for a fee the beach boys will
take you for a ride in an outrigger canoe. Nicknamed "The
Gathering Place," Honolulu practically oozes with things
to do and see, all within a radius of about 6 miles. There's
much to choose from, including botanical gardens, museums,
the Honolulu Zoo and the Waikiki Aquarium,theaters and historical
points of interest. For snorkeling, Hanauma Bay reigns supreme.
From the top of the crater, the turquoise bay beckons waders,
snorkelers and SCUBA divers to explore its coral kingdom and
protected marine preserve, teeming with fish so tame they'll
eat right out of your hand. Windsurfers love the beaches on
the Windward side of Oahu, especially Kailua Beach County
Park. While the long crescent beach and calm water make for
a pleasant family outing, the trade winds that pick up around
lunchtime offer windsurfers a great ride for all levels of
ability. In the winter, the big-wave action can be found on
Oahu's North Shore, mainly at the (in)famous Waimea Bay and
Sunset Beach. At its wildest, Waimea Bay breaks at 35 feet,
but when it's mellow the bay is fine for bodysurfing and swimming.
Come in the early evening for incredible sunsets. Other things
to try: a surf lesson from one of the tanned Waikiki beach
boys; a ride in an outrigger canoe, glass-bottom boat or submarine;
an afternoon browsing Chinatown
for antiques and unique Asian gifts;
a short hike to the top of Diamond Head crater for the best
view in town.Something for everybody!
