Majahuitas Resort, Puerto Vallarta
Secluded - Casual - Primitive

Desert island hideaways don't get much better than idyllic Majahuitas Resort. There are no roads to the eight ocean view casitas of Majahuitas. Set in a beautiful, secluded bay 13 miles south of Puerto Vallarta, Majahuitas is a Swiss Family Robinson-style hideaway reachable only by boat. The 20-minute ride in the small boat sent for you, along a rugged and beautiful stretch of coastline with countless coves and rocky headlands, is a treat in itself. Landing on the white sands of a small bay with crystalline waters, a peaceful stranded-on-a-beach feeling will envelope you. From here on, everything is provided by your hosts and nature.

Hidden amongst palms, platanes and mango trees and backed by forested hills, are eight solar-powered, open-air casitas with palm-thatched roofs and hand-crafted furnishings. Accommodations range from a rambling treetop perch overlooking the bay to a thatched hut on stilts reachable by a bridge over a small stream. Each casita having a perfect sea view. We love the airy rooms, the hammocks overlooking the bay. Each casita is individually designed and, though all are close to the beach and main building, their positioning ensures a high level of privacy.
The atmosphere is wonderfully laid-back and, though it is easy to hide yourself away, the general ambience is familial with dinners taken at a communal table, talkative children chatting to whoever will listen and a couple of Labradors sleeping in the shade. The efficient and friendly staff also make you feel very much at home. Waking to the sound of birdsong and the caress of tropical breezes is sublime. Guests tend to spend most of their days on the blissful beach. Settled on chaise lounges in the warmth of the sun, we watch as a battalion of hermit crabs in knobby shells humps and bumps over ripples in the sand, marching inland; they freeze in place as I stretch my arms. A fashion show of butterflies sail from the jungle, across the sand of the half-moon bay and to the rocky headland. A flotilla of flying fish flashes past the bay like an extremely localized rain shower. Halfway to the horizon, five dolphins arc gracefully in unison. Other activities include kayaking, hiking to nearby villages and boat trips to Yelapa or Puerto Vallarta, or simply lazing on the pristine beach and cooling off in the sea.

The rusticity of the open-air casitas, some perched on the hill, others right where the waves break, doesn't mean luxury, comfort or service is spared. At Majahuitas it is barefoot-with-linen, and if you consider plugging in your laptop or making a phone call a luxury, this is not the place for you. There are no phones on property, and guest rooms do not have electrical outlets. Torches, candles and lanterns light the way when the sun goes down. The resort boasts gourmet food and extraordinary service. Evening meals are candlelit occasions, served beachside with beautifully presented dishes worthy of any five star restaurant in town. Delicious and freshly prepared breakfasts and lunches are also included in the nightly rates. By special arrangement, an intimate beachfront dinner for two can always be arranged.

Whether it's a romantic tryst or a family vacation, there's something for everyone at Majahuitas. Your fancy may take you to the nearby underwater canyon, encountering sea turtles or manta rays on the way, gazing at dolphins and theatrical humpback whales on the horizon, or up the stream into the jungle where countless birds and incredible flora dazzle you. You may just choose to crawl into a hammock with a book and enjoy the attention of the amiable staff with your favorite tropical concoction. "Majahuitas is the ideal Mexican secret getaway...a rustic, yet first-class, beachfront resort located along a rugged coastline bay."
